“We can be sure that the greatest hope for maintaining equilibrium in the face of any situation rests within ourselves.”– Francis J. Braceland
December ushers in a time where we are particularly focused on giving and receiving. One cannot give without also receiving.
This brings to mind a relevant feng shui concept: the Taoist concept of yin and yang. Yin and yang is the concept that while all things are one, they can be divided into two equal halves, opposites that together create wholeness. The opposites cannot exist without the other. So, when the whole is divided into two, there is an upset in the equilibrium, leaving the halves to seek a new balance between themselves. When something is whole, it is complete, unchanging. And yet we know that the one constant we can depend on in life is change. And so ying/yang applies to how we must live: in balance.
The holidays present unique challenges of finding balance. There is too much to do, too little time, too many people, too many options… you get the idea.
How can you balance yourself this holiday season and set the tone for the year to come?
Give to others. It’s that simple. One easy way to raise your vibration and live in harmony and balance is to think of others. Step outside of yourself and your own needs or wants. There are numerous ways to do this, from looking up from your hurried holiday shopping to simply give a smile to a stranger to making a holiday donation to a charity. Give to others to promote better balance and feng shui. San Diego: we aren’t hiding under winter layers, so we can at least do the smile!
Receive with grace. If someone compliments you on your hosting or on your looks this season, rather than downplay the compliment or make light of what was said, just say “thank you”. And smile.
Give to (nurture) yourself first and foremost. Follow the “oxygen mask protocol” – the airline recommendation of putting on your own oxygen mask before assisting someone else. You cannot give fully and wholly to others when you are empty. You cannot receive the love you want from others unless you first love yourself. You may ask:
How do you give to yourself? Give yourself some time! If you are overworked, over scheduled, stressed, the best gift you can give yourself is some quiet time. In this gift of time you can meditate, practice breathing, go outside and look at the trees and the flowers and the birds, and balance our feng shui. San Diego makes it easy to do this. Stepping away from the “crazy” “for as little as five minutes will be a gift to yourself, offering a much-needed chance to reboot, rebalance, and reconnect with yourself.
Receive the Universe’s offerings with gratitude. Do so aloud; there is power and primacy into the spoken word. Be grateful to others for what they give you – not just physically, but emotionally, too. Be grateful to the Universe for all your gifts (your skills, the water you drink, the air you breathe, your security, your freedom). In keeping with the principle of yin and yang, what you give away you also receive. Gratitude expressed opens the way for you to receive more.
